Sisters and brothers in the south of Mexico are literally resisting the death megaprojects imposed by neoliberalism, because, as some of them say, even after death resistance persists.
La Caravana El Sur Resiste! is a call from the National Indigenous Congress (CNI) that has started to tour the natural regions and communities affected by two immense megaprojects in Mexico, linking indigenous peoples who put their lives to resist the so-called Interoceanic Corridor and Mayan Train. Combined, both projects will plunder their water and territory, and will cut the country in half, affecting seven states in southern Mexico, devastating their forests and jungles. The consequences are huge, but not only to them but to Mexico, Central America and the United States.
In return, savage industrialization will bring hotel cities, prostitution, drugs, narcos, crime and femicides, and a false idea of progress with low-paying and enslaving jobs. In short, it will tighten the noose that suffocates mother earth and the people who defend her to give free rein to the psychotic civilization of death and its insatiable capitalist matrix.
U.S. companies are already planning to set up operations in the region, including Constellation Brands, Caxxor, Hyundai, Amazon, Cargill, General Motors, Visteon, Shell, Nestle, Applied Energy Services (AES corporation); EDP Renewables; Sempra Infrastructure; TC Energy; and Invernergy. These companies do not come alone, they are accompanied by their guard dogs provided by the Mexican state: police, national guards, army and navy, paramilitary groups and organized crime gangs. They are also up against a government that, by dressing up as a leftist, has legitimized industrial destruction, the devastation of nature and the people who defend it, and the militarization of the country.
